September 15 to 19, 2025 is Sewer Safety Week. This joint initiative is promoted by Ontario Safety Partners OOC, Enbridge Gas, TSSA, Utilities Kingston, and Kitchener Utilities to raise awareness about sewer safety inspections (SSI).
SSIs can save lives!
Some underground natural gas pipes may have been unintentionally installed through sewer pipes – a situation known as a sewer cross bore. Although this is rare, the pipes can co-exist safely and go undetected until the sewer pipe is blocked and needs to be cleared. Mechanical plumbing tools could easily damage natural gas pipes and lead to a dangerous natural gas leak.
This is why it is important people know to call OOC if their blockage is outside the walls of their home to request a free sewer safety inspection before attempting to clear the blockage.
Sewer Safety Week
Sewer Safety Week will feature OOC’s “Your Line Might Not Be Fine” campaign, this year geared explicitly towards plumbers. For the first time, OOC and partners have developed an ad for the Plumbing and HVAC Magazine. During this week, OOC and partners will also share daily social media educational posts and digital advertisements.
