A Transformational Opportunity for Ontario
Ontario One Call, in partnership with Infrastructure Ontario, is proposing to advance a strategic initiative that will protect workers, safeguard critical infrastructure, and accelerate the province’s ambitious build agenda through the implementation of the Ontario Underground Infrastructure Mapping Strategy.
Today, Ontario’s underground infrastructure is managed by over 800 organizations, each using various systems and formats to collect and manage their asset data. This fragmentation leads to inefficiencies, which contribute to safety risks and costly delays. To address this, the Strategy proposes to establish a unified, secure, and standards-based data ecosystem that enhances worker and public safety, reduces damage to infrastructure, and creates efficiencies in the excavation process.
Anchored in proven international models and tailored to Ontario’s unique regulatory and operational landscape, the Strategy will reinforce Ontario’s leadership in infrastructure management and digital innovation.
Strategic Objectives
- Safeguard Critical Infrastructure: Ensure accurate identification of underground assets.
- Protect Workers and the Public: Reduce utility strikes and excavation-related incidents.
- Accelerate Infrastructure Delivery: Streamline locate processes and reduce delays.
- Enable Innovation: Unlock new capabilities through predictive analytics and advanced technologies that support smarter infrastructure planning.
Projected Benefits
- $1.3 billion CAD in economic benefits over 10 years.
- Enhanced worker and public safety.
- Fewer underground infrastructure strikes.
- Improved quality and accuracy of locates.
- Creation of system-wide efficiencies in the excavation process.
